Chris Webber retired
Thursday, March 27, 2008
The Kings were totally my team up until like NBA Live 2006. They had Bibby, Divac, Peja... Jibbi Jibbs (you remember him?) and Chris Webber. And I know what you're thinking, Jibbi Jibbs was good. But EA's algorithms always favored Chris. He had the post moves, he could do that spin toward the basket, and there was that never-fail hop-step dunk move that he had down to perfection. And when it was close with only a few seconds left in the 4th, you knew the machine wasn't gonna let Chris miss the shot. He was always player of the game, even when Jibbi hit 35 points or Peja was 6 for 8 from the 3 point line. When Kim and I first really got into basketball we both really liked the Kings -- it was actually her that first gravitated toward them. We were watching that game in the Western Conference finals, sitting in a daquiri bar near my mom's house of all places. It was such a good game, game 6 I'm fairly sure, and all they had to do was win this one. Or maybe it was game 5 and they had all of the momentum or something. In the final play of the game Robert Horry hits that 3 pointer at the buzzer to win the game and that was it. The Kings were over. Webber got hurt, Peja took over the team and was doing great. Webber came back and things fell apart...
It was sad, really, to see them dismantle that team. Doug Christie -- where is he now? Luckily for us we have Stojakovic here in New Orleans now. I felt bad seeing Bibby go to Atlanta. Webber's bounced around for the last few years and been a bit inconsequential, but it kinda felt like he was doing his Gary Payton tour, trying to see who could hook him up with a ring. Now that he's retiring I'm disappointed for him that he wasn't able to win it with the Kings. He was the centerpiece of a very fun team to watch and definitely played a role in sparking both kim's and my interest in basketball.

hate macs
Monday, March 24, 2008
I hate macs. I have more network problems with macs then I've ever had with PCs. I just opened my mac that has been in hibernation so that I can publish a Flash file. The file happens to live on my pc. So I open as OS window (what are these called on macs, anyway -- the equivelent to an "Explorer" window?) and click on Network. But... nothing. Ironically, the only way I can get the mac to recognize the network is to reboot. Sometimes if I just let it sit for a while it'll come to. But it never "just works".Worse yet is when I'm trying to publish a network file -- and by that I mean open a file that lives on the mac with the pc and export a swf using designery mac fonts -- and the mac crashes. Or flash crashes. Or the network drops. Or the mac is just having a bad day or whatever other stupid issue it might be having. And then I try to open the file again and it's broked. Or the mac gives me some cryptic error message and it just deletes the file. I LOVE THAT. That happened to me while I was on "vacation" recently, fixing some bugs in this Flash game, and the mac decided it didn't really feel like opening that file. And if the mac can't have it no one can. I wound up losing 3-4 hours of graphical changes in the .fla file.
"Macs are even better now because they have intel chips and can run windows!" My pc has been able to run windows all along.

1,3,7 & 9 are the loneliest numbers...
Friday, March 07, 2008
I have recently come to this realization that I favor even numbers over odd numbers, with the exception of any number that is divisible by 5. I'm often dealing with x & y coordinates in attaching graphics to the stage in my flash work, and I've realized that even if a graphic is positioned at say (207, 173), I'll change that to (205,172). This isn't really odd, though... i mean, this is why rounding was invented, right? But what's better about 176 than 177?Something else i just realized, though, is that the number 369 is entirely acceptable to me. It's because it's entirely divisible by three, and each of its digits is divisible by 3. Neat, yes? I'm also a fan of the number 169 - 13 squared.
It's patterns. Many numbers, at least 3+ digit numbers, have patterns. But you know, numbers ending in 3s and 7s are generally much more boring and less discernible, pattern-wise. Even "is divisible by 2" is a pattern, even if it's the most basic one.
