Sidney Noble
Saturday, January 20, 2007
My newest son, Sidney Noble Van Pelt, was born a week ago today.
His hair's not orange, must be the lighting.
The last two weeks have been pretty tumultuous... first with Sid's birth, then with catching up at work after. Everything was going quite smoothly with the birth, so much so that i was just thinking to myself "I can't believe how quickly this is all coming along..." and just then the doctor says, "Uh oh, he's breached." (Butt first.) We were basically given two options. We could try a normal delivery and risk him not coming out right... a leg gets stuck, his head gets stuck... or C-Section. Just to be sure, they grabbed an ultra-sound machine to check out his position and decided that it was just too risky, so C-Section it was.
I'm going to save the details where I tell the whole story about what a bad experience Kim had in the hospital with the doctors and nurses because it's pretty much immaterial at this point. They're home and they're both doing well. Sidney's a really good baby so far. Doesn't fuss too much, sleeps well, eats like a little pig. You know, it's funny. When babies are first born they make the goofiest noises, especially when they're trying to eat and they can't figure out where they are or where they're going. They get frustrated and start squirming and snorting and panting. It's quite amusing.
I had a week off of work to be with Kim and the baby after he was born, but I wound up spending most of the time home with the kids while Kim and the baby were stuck in the hospital forever. My mother-in-law generously offered to come in town for two weeks, mostly to spend time with the kids and help Kim while I work, which was especially helpful this week as I've been pretty busy trying to play catch-up on a project that's already got a compressed timeline.
It's odd to me now, having a new baby around, how much it reminds me of when elise was born -- and how little i remember from graham was an infant. Maybe it's just that elise's earliest days were so well documented. I had a new digital camera and was constantly updating her website. Two years later when graham was born I wasn't quite into it in the same way. Then again, Kim only had a month off of work instead of the 12 weeks she had with elli. Now she doesn't work at all, yay! And, I have a new camera again, so I can try to be more vigilant with the pictures.
Speaking of being vigilant with pictures, it seems that i'm missing everything from May '03 to Sept '04. I should probably try to find them on CDs or old hard drives before they're permanently lost and i have no visual evidence that graham was ever a baby... if i really want to remember that.

NBA Standings
Tuesday, January 02, 2007
Just something I noticed that I thought I'd point out before I go to bed...It's funny that the top seed in the East would be the 6th seed, were they in the West with the same record (not even considering that, were they in the West, they'd be playing Western teams twice as much as they do now).
The other thing that's odd is that, if the NBA season started today, neither the winner of last year's Super Bowl nor the NBA Finals would even make it to the playoffs. How is Miami at 13-17? And Milwaukee is above .500!
Wait, how the hell is Toronto 4th?
